Biography

Robert Deal has more than 15 years of experience representing business owners, buyers, sellers, landlords, tenants, developers, contractors, lenders, and borrowers in all types of commercial real estate, business, and banking transactions.

Robert has extensive experience in banking and finance law, representing several regional banks as well as developers, builders, and real estate owners in all aspects of secured lending transactions, including the commitment letter, due diligence review, commercial loan documentation and negotiation, and closing and post-closing requirements. He has been involved in a wide variety... of finance transactions including real estate acquisition, construction and refinance loans, GSA loans, mezzanine loans, and loans secured by corporate assets, franchise licenses, ground leases, and other collateral. He has also reviewed or drafted legal opinions for loan transactions, some for loans more than $100 million dollars.

Robert’s real estate practice focuses on the preparation and negotiation of contracts for the acquisition, sale and/or exchange of property; the preparation of easements, dedications, and subdivisions, and the negotiation and drafting of commercial leases for various real estate asset types, including office, retail, restaurant, and industrial uses. He also assists clients from a business perspective through the review and drafting of business contracts and the formation of entities that will best serve their legal and business needs by providing individualized attention and personal response to their requests and requirements.

Robert understands the sensitivities and commercial realities of lending, borrowing, and developing in today’s market. In the course of transactions such as loan purchases and indemnity-secured collateral, he has assisted clients in finding ways to limit the costs of a transaction for all of the parties while maintaining the security of the loan and maximizing the benefit to his clients. He has also worked with lenders and borrowers in dealing with troubled loans through restructures and workouts.

By focusing on the details of every transaction, Robert works hard for his clients to find creative solutions to structure and document commercial transactions that meet his client’s needs and to ensure that transactions proceed to close in a manner that protects the client’s interests while doing so in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Robert is admitted to practice in Virginia and is a member of the Virginia State Bar. Before law school, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism, with an emphasis in Public Relations, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science, each from Arizona State University, graduating magna cum laude from the Barrett Honors College in 2002. He earned his Juris Doctor from the George Mason University School of Law School in 2005.
