Biography

Mark Magas is a Senior Associate Attorney at the Chicago office of Dunlap Bennett & Ludwig. Mark focuses his practice on patent, trade secret, and trademark litigation; technology transfer; and intellectual property monetization. With extensive experience in protecting his clients’ rights across various industries, Mark has successfully navigated complex legal challenges to achieve favorable outcomes for his clients. 

Previously, Mark... worked for over ten years in the patent licensing and brokerage industry. As a Director at Cascades Ventures, a boutique patent monetization company, he helped inventors and companies achieve numerous patent sale, license, and settlement agreements worth millions of dollars. He also consulted for various patent licensing companies, providing infringement analysis services, and worked for three years in the engineering department at Acacia Research Group. 

Mark has worked on matters from a wide array of technology areas, including artificial intelligence, mobile authentication, computer memory architecture, processor optimizations, microLED displays, projector optics, DNA amplification, mobile health diagnostics, audio-video streaming, multimedia navigation, unified cloud communications, power tools, firearms, remote control, beverage dispensers, and bicycle saddles, among others. 

Outside of work, Mark loves playing hockey, fishing, experimenting with artificial intelligence technology, and enjoying time with his wife and kids. 

Experience

  • Health Discovery Corp. v. Intel Corp., 6:22-CV-00356-ADA (W.D. Tex. 2022): In a patent infringement case involving artificial intelligence technology based on recursive feature elimination feature for support vector machines, helped client achieve a favorable result after filing an amended complaint and surviving a motion for judgment on the pleadings over 35 U.S.C. § 101. 
  • Patriot Ordinance Factory, Inc. v. Hearing Protection LLC, 3:21-CV-00477-WMC (W.D. Wis. 2021): In a patent infringement case involving gun barrel nuts with radial fins to prevent excessive heating, helped client defend against the infringement allegations and achieve an early, favorable settlement. 
  • Guantanamera Cigars Company v. SMCI Holding, Inc. et al, 1:21-CV-21714-JG (S.D. Fla. 2021): In a trademark infringement case involving Guantanamera’s DUO trademark and our client’s White Owl Duos product, helped client defend against the infringement allegations and achieve a favorable settlement after prevailing on a bench trial and a new trial motion.

At Dunlap Bennett & Ludwig, our team of paralegals and staff work together collaboratively along side our attorneys toward a common goal. We have created a positive work environment where our paralegals and legal assistants work to successfully reach firm-wide goals and support each other to combine individual strengths to enhance team performance.
