OVERVIEW

Trusted legal advice for political candidates and organizations

Running for office, supporting a candidate, lobbying, and voting: in this political climate, these activities have more critical implications than ever before. And clients need to understand the impact of the choices they make as well as the shifting laws, administrative hurdles, and political challenges they may face in campaigns and elections.

That’s why you need lawyers you can trust to guide you through the complex election process. Dunlap Bennett & Ludwig has extensive experience working with candidates, elected officials, lobbyists, political parties, political action committees (PACs), nonprofits, and other organizations at every stage of political campaigns.

About our role in the political process

Dunlap Bennett & Ludwig’s experienced lawyers have counseled candidates running for office, individuals participating in and influencing the electoral process, and clients interacting with government officials on matters involving federal, state, and local law. We have assisted campaigns and candidates at every stage of an election. Our lawyers have been involved in election day lawsuits based on problems with voting equipment and voter queues. We also have experience handling post-election recounts.

Our experienced team, which includes both a former and current general counsel of a major statewide party, provides legal counsel to corporations, trade associations, PACs, and nonprofits on campaign finance matters, lobbying registration, ethics, and gift and disclosure rules. We have also advised and represented political parties in disputes, including in litigation in federal and state courts.

What we do

  • Counsel political candidates on ballot access and nomination processes
  • Represent candidates in recounts and other election-related matters
  • Ensure compliance with the Federal Election Campaign Act, Lobbying Disclosure Act, and the Ethics in Government Act as well as with state and local election laws
  • Counsel clients on campaign finance matters, lobbying registration, and ethics concerns
  • Help PACs with formation, governance, operations, and reporting issues
